If you want to stick with a John Deere system. You can get an older 2600 display with an AutoTrac activation, a StarFire 3000 receiver, a new or lightly used ATU 300 wheel and a harness from Ag Express to connect it all together. It's going to push closer to $5000, but it's a solid setup and can be expanded later if you want RTK, a newer screen for more advanced functions or you buy a 10 year old planter for instance.

The only down side I have to the ATU is it's not the simplest device to move. I used to move an ATU between a bean planting tractor, to a forage harvester and then a bean combine to finish the year. It worked well and was very reliable, but I had to plan on at least 90 minutes per move. The hubs to fit different brands of machines and anti rotation devices got to be a booger at times.
