Makes a difference IMHO, a lot of backgrounding done with whole corn and a balancer pellet. I'm not a fan of whole corn, before I had a roller mill, I'd run the grinder/mixer slow to just about crack every kernel. Smaller calves need more protein than older ones.
Also, I believe in testing (and not just guessing) the hay and build your ration around what you already have.
