You know, I had to look it up... The Russo Georgian war looks like it was the beginning of it all. I found this article on it from the Strategic Studies Institute. This war all stems on how they drew up the lines during the USSR days...they just kept it the same instead of using ethnic boundaries from before the USSR. Crimea has been Russian since 1783, and all that live there speaks Russian.
