Yes, it does not weaken the post at all. Some folks install an eye bolt, cable and turnbuckle setup. A notched wire is very common. Staples won't hold long at an angle.
This is a 150 year post, maybe longer. I bet it weighs 700+ lbs Fire is the only real threat to this corner.
Don't plan on replacing these any time soon
