I've grown corn following canola (oilseed rape) twice and there was some volunteer canola that overwintered. Just as good of corn as following a different crop.
This year I had a field of corn with a rye/wheat/camelina mix terminated a couple weeks ahead of planting and it was my best corn.

That is not to say that there aren't circumstances where an overwintered brassica ahead of corn could hurt, but I haven't seen that yet.
