My experiences with CHM are exactly like Jay's. Negotiation is between the patient and the doctor. I would not doubt that if CHN sees a bill that wasnt discounted, they might make some phone calls on behalf of the organization and member. But we always are "Self Pay", and the service provider takes it from there. One thing that scares people is the idea that patient needs to pay cash up front, or soon after the service. All providers work with patients on payment plans and terms, and still discount as requested. Hospitals and doctors wait a long time to get paid by insurance companies, and are glad to be paid period. Fear drives the insurance business, and keeps many people paying high costs. My level for sharing at CHM, while still half of most insurance costs, only has 1000 out of pocket, and is costing shy of 500 per month.
I'm not sure what you mean by "you got away with one"? You must use christian healthcare?
I believe that Boone sells insurance. The comments he makes about CHM and other Christian sharing groups are typical insurance salesmen tactics to discourage anyone from looking into these groups. I will fully admit that they are not for everyone, but they work for many.
I tried to get health insurance through healthcare.org back when Obama forced us to sign up or face tax penalties. A high deductible plan was going to cost my family of 4 about $1600 per month ($19,200 per year). At the time (2013?), the tax penalty for a family of 4 not having insurance was about $20k. Congress eliminated the penalty in 2019.
Facing a $20k per year penalty, I looked into CHM. I knew some other local families that had been using it for years. It made a lot of sense. Cost has steadily increased over the past ten years, but still under $400 per month.
Looking back, I would have spent $200,000 over the last 10 years on insurance, versus $40k on CHM. The insurance had a $10k deductible. My medical bills over the past 10 years have been less than $10k. Now an insurance salesman will tell me that I was lucky. Yes, I have been lucky. Bad things can happen. But that is why I have CHM. When bad things happen, bills will get paid. The difference between CHM and insurance: Insurance companies are out to make a profit for their stockholders at the customers expense. CHM is non-profit and that is why their rates are so low. |
