Subject: Cleaning this up.. Benzene IS a known carcinogen.

mac4440 - 11/27/2024 07:20

Where did I ever say anything against ethanol? Thought we were talking about how much benzene is allowed in fuel. I just stated there is a big economic incentive to get the benzene out of gasoline and there are other ways the refinery uses to get the octane they want.

Fine.

I said.. “higher levels of ethanol blends reduce the need for benzene a known carcinogen.”  True.

You deflected.. “All gasoline is regulated for max benzene content.” Also True.

I pointed out that “adding ethanol is cheaper, safer and probably reduces cancer risk.” True.

you return with.. “I thought we were talking about Benzene.” Well I guess so.. but.. to imply that it is safe.. and regulated.. well so are cigarettes but that too can lead to cancer so…???

whatever dude.  Benzene is a known carcinogen.

Gasoline contains the BTEX group, consisting of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylenes, all of which are toxic [79]. Within the BTEX group, benzene is the sole chemical classified as a human carcinogen [10]; it is a causal agent of leukemia and is associated with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and multiple myeloma [711]. While the general population experiences low exposure to benzene at gas stations when dispensing gasoline, at-risk populations include those who are occupationally exposed, people that live near gas stations, and children in schools near stations [1216]. People living near gas stations can be exposed to chemicals from the stations even inside their homes, as modeled by Hicklin et al. [17] in Malta and measured by Barros et al. [18] in Portugal. Additionally, studies suggest that there may be a risk of childhood leukemia associated with living close to gas stations [1922]. Yet another study concluded that the lifetime cancer risk at and around selected gas stations in Iran exceeded values proposed by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) [23].

Big Oil attacks ethanol as “bad for your car” Even though they don’t tell you that the other octane boosters.. such as BTEX are also “bad for your car.”

Big Oil does not tell you that Benzene is “Bad for YOU” as a carcinogen which can lead to leukemia or other bad outcomes.

Yes the refineries can use sulfuric acid to make higher octane additives through alkylation.. but this is expensive.. when ethanol accomplishes the same for cheaper.. and it’s safe.

there.. have we covered all the bases?
