Subject: RE: Wagons vs Trucks

You have to decide on your operation. Small town elevators are closing. RR closed the line thru here +30 years ago.
They even took up a small siding that one elevator used. *the other towns had a dead end line going to 3 small towns*. I don’t know if it ended, or rejoined another main. *it’s snowmobile trail*
I use grain cart for harvest. I have 3 boxes I use to haul corn to elevator. One is 7 miles each way. Tractor, or pickup truck. Normally +400 bu or 350 bu. The other one is 24 miles each way. I do haul there, mostly with pickup. But by being a set up loader. They cut me a deal. Last loads were $150 per load. 50 miles, + driver. I can’t complain. Let’s guess 5 mpg? 50 miles 10 gallons, $4 =$40. At least a hour round trip. $30? So half the cost before considering truck, insurance… I figure if I stay under 30 loads. It just will not pencil out even if I found a $15k truck,& trailer that were in good shape.
Figure it out for yourself. Check costs to hire. I haul loads on occasion. Cleaning out bottom of bin if grain cart not hooked up.
