An engineering student from India told me a long time ago that their schools spent most of their time teaching students how to use the trig/calculus formulas and how to look them up in a math/engineering handbook (or on a computer/smart phone today). I think your school's math teacher is on the right track, he should contact a machinist to show how often trig is used when designing and machining parts.
