Why do you think it needs to be a desktop?  What about an docking station or simply and extra monitor and keyboard?  

If you're determined to get a desktop I'll also suggest the refurb route.  I've bought a few Lenovo Thinkstations off Amazon for a $100-$200 that are plenty capable of anything I'll do farming wise on them.
