The rotor box dipstick on the 1480/1680 combine did that. I think it was air locked in the tube the dipstick was in. It reached into the tube, but not into the gearbox the way it was made. When you removed the stick and put it back in it read fuller than the initial pull out and reading did.


I think the dipstick Has a small hole to vent to stop that from happening. If I remember spray with brake clean and would blow that out. There is also a vent on the top of the gear box that's very had to clean. If you start losing oil most times the vent is plugged.
