Subject: Protein Supplementation Protocols

SW Iowa
I am curious to learn what others in the midwest area do to supplement mature cows let out on corn stalks in the fall/winter and spring calving season until they are back on pasture and more importantly WHY? This varies from operation to operation but I am still trying to learn what reasoning and timing are needed to warrant supplementing mature cows so as to avoid overspending and also under supplementing. I get once they are solely on hay we should get it tested and see how short they are on protein but outside of that time of year is more what I am interested in. We typically have used Mix 30 and protein tubs depending on location, timing, access, etc.
