Subject: RE: Rye root depth

Redwood Falls, MN
I really like the spring growth aspect of the rye for us personally. The windiest month in MN is April and we often have the rye germinated and breaking up the wind and holding soil in place where worked, bare fields do not. This is after corn, as well as, our cereal rye crop. We have also gone away from a pre-emerge herbicide in our soybean fields planted into green rye so there is a cost savings there as well. Most years, with adequate management, we don't see a yield difference between fields planted into rye vs without rye and feel that the potential erosion help and cost savings of no pre makes it worthwhile.

For the soil, those rye roots are giving off exudates that are feeding our microbes and that's worth something. After corn in MN, having any living root is better than nothing and the rye will be there in the spring for us.
