They dig holes in banks and tunnels in the mud so they can access them underwater. They only make houses where the water is shallow enough. Not sure what they're preference is if they have both habitats available. The holes can be destructive to banks, dams, levees etc.
I bet you'll see the runs underwater if you walk along the shore of ponds and rivers.
