I did the same for my Outback Max monitors but found that the small batteries didn't last. I ended up disconnecting one of the 4 starter batteries to use for the gps equipment and then installed a boat battery automatic disconnect between the batteries. Yes, this should certainly work. I'm surprised you had failures with the small batteries. In my case, the small battery was only running a separate GPS itself and not providing power for steering or application control. The power for that came from the tractor directly as usual. Really my small battery was only there to provide enough voltage to keep Omnistar from dropping out during the time I was starting the tractor. .
