mercer county, il | For me it depends on the situation. If we can sell dairy quality alfalfa for good $$, I’ll sell the alfalfa, and buy corn gluten, works well for both cows and backgrounding the fall weaned calves through the winter.
But we graze stalks from October-April generally, and keep them moved to fresh stalks regularly. We typically start supplementing in January or February, depending on weather, body condition, and stage of pregnancy. The last trimester, you need to supplement some protein, but other than that, if you can keep them on fresh stalks and don’t get a ton of snow or freezing rain, shouldn’t need much supplement.
I’ve always thought the protein lick tubs were kinda overpriced. Have a mineral that suits your situation out free choice, and bucket feed gluten. Has the added benefit of all the cows coming up when you feed, making it easier to lay eyes on them. | |
