Southeast WI
Let's talk "wear and tear on equipment". That point gets brought up often here. Many broadcast and lightly work or just leave it on top. Here i drill because when it's warm nightcrawlers treat the seed like dead residue and gather it up in piles and take some down their holes plus other critters can eat the seed (yes slugs too some years). So for 100% success i plant my seed.

Now think about the "wear and tear". Cheap NT grain drill being pulled at 6-6.5 mph where there's few rocks with tractor running 1600 rpm. Or let's discuss going the full tillage route pulling a deep ripper or for those guys with vt disks pulling that expensive soil scraper around with a high hp tractor. What tractor and tool is getting beat up worse? Plus using lots of fuel. I can tell you it's not the drill with tractor running at half throttle.

And don't even go and begin the "I can throw bug in a jug at it for cheaper of xyz product". Rye or other living covers do so much more.
