It may seem that it should be possible to tie in an implement switch or relay directly into the system without the need for a module. After all that was extremely easy with the PF3000 by placing a common switch between 2 of the pins in the 25 pin connector.

However, ever since the introduction of the CAN style of displays (Insight and newer) some type of module seems to be needed

I at least, have not found a way to invade the CAN system to simply add an implement switch.

As you mention the Application Rate Module can be setup to work with an implement switch. It can also be used to monitor a flow meter or shaft sensor and start/stop mapping based on when it sees flow. Pretty much all other modules have an implement switch connector of their own. The Application Rate Module is not supported with the newest GO displays so that is not even an option with them.

Coverage mapping can be tied into many auto or assisted steering setups. The map would show where auto steer had been active. This could give a rough idea of the coverage as long as auto steer is used on every pass. This might not be ideal but may be better than nothing.

You mention tying into a PTO or SCV. I have seen some creative ways to utilize that approach but they require some type of module. When I worked as a tech we had call for a switch arrangement where logging was controlled by the PTO. These were manure application situations. We were successful in at least a couple of combinations.

On the Deere 8x00 and 8x10 series, there is a cable leading from the command arm where the PTO switch is located to the right side of the cab. That cable has a 16 pin AMP male/female pair of connectors in it. We were able to disconnect that connector and found that one of the pins (14?) goes to 12V when the PTO switch is engaged. We made a "tee" out of a pair of AMP connectors with all wires running straight through but the PTO wire had a branch leading to the outside world. It was connected to the coil of a 12V SPST automotive relay which was connected to an Ag Leader module. We used a SPDT Center OFF switch in the wiring. The operator then had the choice of ON - OFF - Auto, where Auto meant that that logging would be controlled by the PTO. The switch would be left in the Auto position when hauling manure and the mapping would then start/stop based on the PTO. The idea of making a tee rather than splicing on to the existing wire is that it can be installed or removed easily without disturbing the original wiring. I don't believe this approach would work with the newer 8xxx tractors since I believe the PTO switch is handled differently on them

With certain "red" tractors of that vintage, it was possible to detect when the PTO was engaged by removing a plug on the PTO housing and replacing it with a pressure switch. When the PTO is engaged, hydraulic pressure is present at that location. The pressure switch was used to trigger a relay also which ran to an ON - OFF - Auto switch and Ag Leader module.

As far as hydraulic situations, most modern tractors utilize Pulse Width Modulation to control their SCVs so tapping into the wiring would not be advised.
