I graduated from SDSMT 20 years ago, not in engineering but a science program. If a person likes math, science and engineering but doesn't want all the other stuff, SDSMT is the place to go. Of course there are requirements for the basics of other subjects but very manageable. As others have stated, other colleges may have as good of engineering departments, but definitely not better than SDSMT. I knew of a couple engineering students at the time that got hired by Ag companies. Ag companies are well represented at the career fair. SDSMT is always ranked high in best return on investment. https://www.sdsmt.edu/about/mission-vision-and-values/points-of-prid...

Class sizes are fairly small, so the professors get to know the students. I even had a few professors that required the students to come to their office a few times each semester just to get to know them and make sure nobody was afraid to ask for help.
The campus itself is wonderful. Kind of tucked away with hills on basically 3 sides and minimal development on the north side for half a mile. When on campus, really can't tell that you are in the middle of a city with 70k+ people. Most classes are in 6 main buildings, and all are very close to each other. When I lived on campus, used to watch the Price is Right until the winner was declared, leave my dorm and walk into class at the top of the hour before the professor. With everything being close, you don't have to worry about travel time when scheduling classes, everything can be back to back if you want.
Tourist season isn't too noticeable for most of the school year. Rapid City and the black hills are a great place. Overall, can't beat the winter weather there compared to the rest of the Dakotas. (Banana belt of SD).

Some negatives, with being a small school, some classes only have one section and not every semester. So, if that class is a fall semester only you have to take it then or wait until next year. And if that class is at 8 am (or 4 pm) you have to take it at that time, can't choose a different option to fit a schedule better.
-There isn't a vast variety of other options to take for fun classes to broaden your interests.
-If you can't stand another student that is in your same program and same year, you are stuck with them for most classes for 4 years, can't get away from them.
-Very few females. Google says 77% male (maybe that's a good thing?)

If my kids would want to go into science or engineering, I would want them to go there.
Every undergraduate gets their name on a plaque on M-hill in the middle of the city. (Maybe other colleges do that too.) https://www.sdsmt.edu/student-life/campus-points-of-interest/off-cam...
