In the navy, they used to have a picture on the wall. It was a whole finger, a ring and 4 inches of tendons beyond that.
I remember that poster too. I also saw a sailor jump off a check stand and get his ring caught on the side of a jet engine. He did not lose his finger, but he suffered lots of damage.
